The author, a White Russian, completely out of step with communistic ideologies, is forced into flight during the Revolution and by guile, wiles, hairtrigger escapes, etc., at last reaches China. Here is the grim game of wandering with prison or death as the stakes, joining up with other Whites, making war on the Reds, living with or fleeing from bandits and nomads, back and forth through Siberia and until he at last crosses the Gobi into safety. A good picture of little known territories and their peoples, during a time of omnipresent mutual distrust, and crammed with dangerous experiences.
