The second of these imports (The Larousse Encyclopedia of Mythology, P. 581, was the first) is here translated into English by Michael Guest and John B. Sidgwick and revised by Z. Kopal, Professor of Astronomy at the University of Manchester, England. There is additional material by Pierre Tardi and an introduction by Fred L. Whipple, of the Smithsonian Astrophysical Observatory and Professor of Astronomy, Harvard University. The four books deal with the splendour of the heavens, the empire of the sun, the realm of the stars and astronomical instruments and techniques. There are 12 color plates and over 800 photographs, drawings and charts. Whipple's introduction points out ""the increasing pace of scientific research and investigation makes nearly impossible the already difficult task of the popular presentation of scientific frontiers""...but that this book will assure a basic foundation in the subject and that study of it will provide a platform of background understanding for future challenges. An addition to reference shelves, and of immediate interest for every kind of star-gazer.
