Another specialized sector of the war in a brisk, brief biography of Patwin, 4 -- the PBY's which were left to handle the Japanese invasion of the undervalued, unprotected Aleutians. Here -- in dialogue -- in incident -- are the boys who flow the PBY's, the women in the factories that made them, and the planes -- pelicans of naval aviation -- slow, heavy, unequal to the Zeros they were up against. Scout planes used to attack, and to shuttle demolition bombs from Dutch Harbor to Kiska, to dive if necessary, despite unpredictable weather. They achieved an incredible, impressive record. Adequate coverage here.
