There is the rhythm of the Irish brogue in Virginia Haviland's retelling of this group of fairy tales. Many will be familiar to children since these basic story lines have been adapted, condensed and rewritten in so many different ways. A poor farm boy who wins the hand of a princess by making her laugh with his unusual tricks, in this case a bee, a harp and a bum-clock, is one such example. Patrick O'Donnell and the Leprecaun is of special interest because it may introduce to youngsters that favorite of make-believe elves. We recommend these for story hour, if possible with ears open to the characteristic vernacular. The 8-11 group will be able to read them independently.
