KIRKUS REVIEW

Based on the career of the Harpe brothers, here are the Heaths, Elijah and Matthew, whose oath to avenge their father's death at the hands of the Regulators, send them from Carolina to the Wilderness Road and the Natchez Trace. Matthew soon wearies of their murderous pursuit but Ell's implacable vengeance takes new forms when, to escape their terrible reputation, he insists they travel as Brother Bradshaw and Brother Collins. With only Captain Mason (now Wilson) and Stegall to go, the Heaths get involved with river pirates, the Spanish Conspiracy and Mat has hopes of winning back his Sally, who is being carefully wooed by Wilson. Sally and Mat take their chance to be free, carry the word of the double crossing in the Conspiracy to Sevier, and, after their marriage, Sally thwarts Mat's efforts to rescue Eli when he is on trial. Quite a yarn of a blood feud, Indians, revivals, crimes, treachery and a long trail of vengeance. Hot blooded and spirited.
