A sports story with good intentions outlines Ernie Abbott's junior year at Mid-western University as a basketball star with a hard row to hoe. Ernie starts the year with the enmity of Professor Bolunt, his history teacher, who has a bad opinion of all athletes. Then his brother Willard, a former football star, now with an investments firm, is jailed. With Willard's reputation to live down, Ernie develops an unattractive outer shell, only to discover still another irritant- a betting ring started in the University. Until Willard is cleared of false charges, Ernie has a fourway battle going on-but with the help of new friends and his own common sense, he manages to bring all his desires-good studies, good basketball, the chip off his shoulder, and the cracking of the betting ring- to fruition.
