THROW A HUNGRY LOOP

A Texas teen-ager ropes both girl and horse in this simple, good-natured story. Tres Bomer dreams of being a rodeo star--even though he no longer has a horse, and his grandfather, Senior, is dead set against the idea. Tres knows that his gentle, ineffectual father, Junior (the three generations inthis all-male household bear the same name), won't be much help, so he works out a plan alone to raise cash and break down the old man's resistance. Meanwhile, he endures the embarrassment of riding SissyBelle, an ancient mule (a situation the author milks for laughs). At the same time, he flirts outrageously with beautiful new classmate Robin Welch. Tres is a combination of Senior's stubbornness and Junior's loyalty and care for others; he earns his mount, twice saves the life of a prized heifer, and learns at last to respect his father and appreciate his grandfather. Readers should enjoy his spunky pursuit of both dream and dreamboat.
