KIRKUS REVIEW

The author of July 4, 1776 has returned to that era to describe the Constitutional Convention at Philadelphia in 1787. Mr. Chidsey's selection of essential detail and his informal, storytelling approach brings clarity to the maze of Constitutional issues. The book offers insight into the eternal question of states' rights for this is where it all began, with large states vs. small and rbanites feared by rural interests. Mr. Chidsey guides the reader through the fascinating debates that sometimes became quabbles and the vote trading on issues has a sense of immediacy built in.
