COLOR FROM A LIGHT WITHIN

The fictionalized biography of Domenikos Theotokopoulos, known to the world as El Greco is written with some expertise by an author who obviously knows his art. He has also given a great deal of time relating the painter to his period and surroundings...Crete as a boy, Venice as a student...Rome...Spain, and he discusses the political, social, economic, and religious influences. Particularly the religious as Domenikos had to adapt. Dubbed a heretic by his static Orthodox church because of his style and viewpoint, the found himself in the Latin Church which permitted expressive freedom about sacred subjects. El Greco himself gets somewhat lost in the massive detail and the highly romanticized dialogues between him and his mistresses, wives, but this emerges as an efficient portrait of art in the times for a special audience.
