With a background orientation on France, her geographical position, resources, people, government, this analyzes Franco-American relations to 1939, and then through the troubled period of defeat, occupation and liberation; her economic problems (agriculture, industry, labor); her political parties, schisms and shifts in strength, the organization of the Communist Party and its threat to security; her colonies and colonial policy; and her stance today, the acceptance of the Schuman Plan and the realization that Germany is no longer the threat -- but Russia, and that survival is only possible in ""close and cooperative association"" with the members of the Atlantic Community.
