Here's a book on which you can do a job. You've got the Audubon name, which I don't think has been oversold. And the Peattie name which gives it a certain eclat. There are 18 full colore, double page reproductions from the little known Quadrupeds, as well as from the more familiar Birds. There are portraits and unpublished sketches. And the biographical section, and introductory notes by the editor, preceding each item from Audubon's own writings, gives the book added interest and value. The publishers are supplying a good looking prospectus in full color, and there is a special offer of an extra set of the Audubon prints free with orders placed before publication. There is to be a limited edition of not less than 500 and not more than 990 copies, to be apportioned on basis of orders received. This will sell at $12.50....Now for comment on the book itself. I expected it to be a scissors and paste job, and was delightfully surprised to find the material fresh and new. Peattie in his own Singing in the Wilderness has revealed his knowledge of his subject. Now he has studied other sources and given, in this, his well-weighed and considered final version of Audubon's life. He has made careful selection from Audubon's diaries, journals, and other writings. And the whole gives a picture of the man, not only as naturalist and artist, but as shop-keeper, traveler, friend, husband and adventurer in life. Don't miss the chance for plus sale.
