Vol. I told of the Old River, from the days of the Frontier to Secession. This takes up from there, when the Valley was military terrain for ironclads, guerrillas, and the scene of famous fighting, and chronicles the personalities, strategy and outcome of the war. Then on to days of reconstruction, the coming of electricity, the origins of TVA...with the notorious Dayton and Scottsboro trials, with the development of educational programs, and the temper of the people in the face of manmade progress. A book that rounds out a picture and differs from the other books in the Rivers series, in its focus on problems of today, rather than history alone.
