READING FOR ENJOYMENT

This is a disappointing book. An expansion of Mortimer Adler's program, less orthodox in inclusions but equally dogmatic in exclusions. Not a program for intelligent planning of selection, balance, etc., in ""reading for enjoyment"", -- not a guide to setting up one's own measuring rod by which to test the new as well as the classics. generalizations with inadequate application, rather pedagogical in presentation. that there isn't some good common sense some excellent recommendations a fine basis library list in the appendix. But I doubt whether he will inspire his readers in fellow his lead (which Adler succeeds in doing up to a point) or even whether he will persuade many readers to pursue his argument to its end.
