KIRKUS REVIEW

Zaleski is a middle-aged tippler-philanderer in spite of his forgiving wife Hanya whose syntax is more jumbled than his head -- he's determined to retrieve the Virgin's Dowry, a jeweled monstrance worth half a million pounds, now residing in England, courtesy of World War II. He does and this goes on inside and out of jail with a certain apple-cheeked good humor but MacKenzie has told many tighter stories with fewer words and this is no more than a hokey jokey caper.
