A GUIDE TO NATURE IN WINTER

For Northeast and North Central America, this attractive manual contains guides for several subjects--weeds, trees, insects, birds and their nests, mushrooms, tracks, and plants. Included in each part are descriptions characterizing the subject, identification keys, and illustrations which help narrow down the field of possibilities. The section on snow presents first a general discussion of landscapes, then a well-illustrated analysis of snowflake crystals. The chapter on paw and footprints groups them by the number of toes and also represents the distinctive patterns they make. A useful arrangement establishing that there's life out there--even in the cold.
