Working down from weaving (1974), crochet (1975), and macrame (1972), Lightbody was bound to hit bottom at braiding--""one of the oldest known fiber techniques' and certainly one of the most limited. To be sure, the braids demonstrated here--including eight-strand alternating, diamond pattern, girl scout, and a Peruvian flat sixteen-strand variation that looks like weaving--do testify that there's a little more to this technique than making pigtails. Among the projects are a hairband, a belt, a plant hanger, filler for a folding screen (the real job, making the frame, is not tackled here), straps for a silly-looking beach tote made out of a bath towel, and, out of various braids woven together, a pleasingly hairy floor pillow cover. Essentially just another twist to the author's string of crafts books.
