Too bad that material as challenging and unusual as this should be virtually killed by the style and the story. On the whole, with but few exceptions, the telling is lifeless and stilted. The story deals with a youth of one of the extinct Indian tribes who inhabited the district where Los Angeles now stands, as late as the arrival of the Spaniards. The scholarship back of the book is authentic. Might have some local interest and value.
