Before entering the Catholic Church, Brownson played an important part in various Protestant groups; he collaborated with the social-moral experiments of Fanny Wright and Dale Owen. He was a prime mover in several Presidential Elections -- he led the New England literary movement of Emerson, etc., until, ostracized, he turned to the Church.
