This is an exciting book for anyone interested in the subject- lay or professional, and it should be integral to any subsequent study of the English way of life from prehistory to the present. For here, chronologically, is traced the history of home building, of ecclesiastical, military, industrial construction, the styles, the architects, the builders. Virtually all parts of England are represented both in text and pictures. There are 6 plates in full color; 64 full page plates in monochrome, 1500 architectural drawings, most of them made from photographs taken by John Yarwood on trips the Yarwoods made to the sites. This reader found the text of lively interest in the reflection of changing mores, of varied ways of life. Understandably, the ecclesiastical examples outweigh the others, but the range is great- from military camps to modern bridges.
