A serial killer in New Hampshire's peaceful Dovekey Beach? Well, at least a serial mischief-maker who doesn't mind the occasional unnatural death. The toll includes a suspicious boat engine fire, a shark sighting, a timber rattler lazing far from its natural habitat, a beachful of yucky medical waste, two deaths from anaphylactic shock, and two other less-fatal poisonings. Watercolorist Elizabeth Will, fresh from saving her cantankerous father from a murder rap (Murder Will Out, 1994), takes her usual laid-back approach to schmoozing-cum-detection— with the main attraction this time her returning childhood friend Martha Drake and Martha's maddeningly dishy husband Eamon Robson- -and the result is as evanescent as a summer breeze. The nonstop gossip is appropriately lightweight but lethal, the transparent murder plot just plain silly.
