The intangible qualities of childhood come through these stories and sketches and there is something of the same feeling left as with Katherine Mansfield's work, though it is less fragile. Most of the stories are of little girls to whom adult life is meaningless, save as it shadows or brightens their own orbits. Two or three stories of women which capture definite moods. For the essential spirit, read The Party. Some of these have appeared in magazines. For the discriminating reader.
