Mrs. Faber has been doing an intelligent job with beginning reader biographies and this one makes a good companion volume to add to her Horace Greeley and Robert Frost. Clarence Darrow was a major controversialist and it is interesting to see how fairly faced are such difficult to handle issues as the rise of unionism, his atheism and the argument against the fundamentalist attitude toward evolution. The Loeb/Leopold case is not here but this audience will never miss it. The quick readings of Darrow's courtroom strategies keep the book lively and the fascination of the man in action, his dedication to free thought and full argument comes across with strength.
