Being neither pretty nor ""cute"", Kate, an orphan under the care of the county, had done her best to be a ""sensible child"". Yet when she came to be a family at the Tuttles' in a little seaside town and made friends with Christopher and Nora Cline, who seemed far from sensible people, she found that they could show her the real road to wisdom and happiness. This is a story that few people between nine and twelve, and many older, will be able to resist, it is so full of human kindness. The characters are real enough to become the reader's friends, the refreshing ocean breezes of the little California town pervade the pages, and the story itself is wholly satisfying.
