Bath in its heyday of fashion and wit, with Beau Nash holding court, is the setting for this historical romance. Here live the Lucymains:- Hannah, the eldest, forced into a loveless marriage with wealthy old Sir Hugh, to pay her father's gambling debts; Tony, only son and heir, a coward, who redeems himself by dying defending his sister's name; Carlie, youngest and prettiest of the lot, whose infatuation for handsome Miles is too hard and long a struggle for the too obvious union at the end. The father falls deeper into debt; Carlie becomes a governess, then a hostess in a popular gambling room...all very shocking. A fleeting impression of old Bath is not enough to redeem the novel of its perforation of banalities, its too evident derivation from the pattern of Pride and Prejudice.
