This historical adventure is set in 18th-century England and France and jogs through elaborate events with a journeyman's ease. Mary Stuart Forrester, happy in her tomboy existence with her widowed father at their Hawthorn Hills estate, becomes the victim of her mother's sister, Aunt Felicity, who sees to it tint Mary's ill father, Felicity's lifelong love, is helpless in her keeping; that Hawthorn Hill is sold; and that Mary is packed off to Revolutionary France to serve as governess in an aristocratic family. A mad member of the clan commits a ritual murder and is tracked down, the bloodthirsty peasants move in, and Mary returns to England as a widowed countess to finish off Felicity. Fast, expert, and slight.
