THE LOOK-IT-UP BOOK OF TRANSPORTATION

An auxiliary encyclopedia with, two possible advantages over the standard sets, timeliness and extensive, ofter precise, illustration. Among the entries are hovercraft and hydrofoils (divided into two groups), moving sidewalks and conveyors of goods (also subdivided), the convertiplane and the monorail; information about older types of transport is similarly up-to-date. Of the illustrations the most useful are the original drawings and diagrams by George Tuckwell, particularly the clear renderings of different types of carriages, railroad cars, sail-boats, trucks and warships. Most of the entries are accompanied by photographs, however, and some are inappropriate. A large and a small skiff represent Rowboats, a white-water craft commonly called a kayak represents the Canoc (while the separate entry for Kayak mentions and shows only the Eskimo type); the Skis are covered by snow, the troika is blocked out by the horses. Other choices simply seem quixotic, e.g. eight 1903-12 models the only Automobiles included. But the majority are helpful, the text simple and concise. Not a bad vehicle depending on where you're going.
