Multi-plotted story of Burma and the English colony, before the war, a story which combines romance, marital mishaps, and intrigue. There is Rose, a sullen young girl, and Renton Winters, sardonic bachelor, who find each other through helping another woman. There is Buffy, who overmothered her husband and neglected her child and lost them both. And there is Constance, who goes into the jungle after her engineer fiance, escorted by a young American hunting butterflies. The ""butterflies"" prove to be Nazi saboteurs -- and the American nets them -- while Constance marries her man. Substantial light reading -- a step up from her first novel.
