Sally Schmidt, in the Marseille of 1940 when the war closes in, is unable to join her mother in Lisbon when her passport is stolen by a German Jewish girl whose need for it might have been presented in a more stringent fashion. But our girl has people to help her... Irish Peter Kelly who manages to be all over; a British Lady Dean (she says doncha). Finally when she goes on alone, without money and papers, and falls in the hands of some Germans--Peter turns up.... Aside from an occasional aside, there's very little to identify this with the time in which it is taking place--or Sally--she's as featureless as the passport photo she's lost.
