This is labelled short stories by the publishers, but it reads more like reminiscent sketches of the Vermonters of Dorothy Canfield's region. Slender plotting -- delightful characterization- strongly flavored with the Vermonters' dry humor, staunch local patriotism, keen sense of right and wrong, inflexibility, rugged individualism. My favorite story of the lot is The Bradlock Chest and Miss Philanda will live long in memory. Bit by bit the composite patchwork quilt of the community fits together. Good Americana -- almost folk material at its inception.
