BIRDS OF PREY by Dorothy Childs Hogner

BIRDS OF PREY

More descriptive than analytical, this book falls prey to the exigencies of catalog format--without displaying the easy-reference virtues of one (like the 1948 o.p. Hausman Birds of Prey of Northeastern North America). The sizes, colors, and whereabouts of diurnal hawks, vultures, and falcons, and nocturnal owls are documented matter-of-factly, and illustrated by drawings that don't admit of much cross-comparing; comments on conservation--the efforts and their import--are interjected throughout, occasionally relieving the presentation of some of its dryness. The smaller-scaled books like Zim's on owls or Ripper or Russell (on hawks) are better to consult from the viewpoints of depth and interest alike, but for sheer quantity this book wins with 49 species studied.
