Companion volume to The Horse Family -- with a similar plan. The major part is devoted to dogs that aid man- sporting dogs, working dogs, pets, their likes and differences, their origins and developments to present day status. The descriptions should be enough, the publishers evidently feel, but this reader is convinced that the sketches are too few, and that recognition value is very largely dependent on linking descriptions and drawing. The section on various kinds of wild dogs, and a final section telling of dogs in history and myth, and four footed creatures akin to the dog family, complete a rather disappointing book.
