THE BIRTHDAY

Penny, a little girl already known to readers known to readers of The Happiest Day (1959, p. 6, J-6) and Hide and Seek (1960, p. 553, J-211), is discouraged about her birthday party, because, unlike parties given by her friends, nothing special has been planned. Five friends arrive for Penny's sixth birthday party-- which turns into a flamboyant success after a dog destroys the cake and most of the decorations, and subsequently, four uninvited guests arrive. The uncomplicated story is told in language which first year readers --certainly second year-- should be able to handle by themselves. Penny's experience is one which will provoke identification among the young.
