With a new baby coming, Kyle loses his special place--Mother's lap is getting smaller, while Daddy's is ""too hard and bumpy,"" Grandma's ""too soft and squishy,"" and the (male) babysitter, knees akimbo, ""hardly ha[s] a lap at all!"" Even after he's born, baby Matt seems to occupy Mother's lap until she makes a special point of finding a time to welcome Kyle back to his favorite place. The theme is well worn, but the watercolor illustrations here are lively and fresh. Overall, the book is wholesome and appealing and has the added dividend for many collections that the characters are African-Americans.
