A thorough text on buffalo, conjuring up the dusty, noisy, earth-rumbling sense of the herd. Patent lingers no longer than necessary on the sad struggle of bison, commonly known as buffalo, to survive the depredations of the 19th century; they have survived, their numbers are growing, and this account dwells on their life patterns and new homes. This is a well-researched book. Patent does not talk down; she expects interested readers to follow along. Such difficult subjects as the diseased bison cows from the Yellowstone infecting neighboring herds of cattle are squarely faced. Munoz's photography, black-and-White and beautiful, catches the bison in all their moods and variety, amply illustrates points of the text, and powerfully shows the great sweep of a running herd. A list of sites where bison may be seen in the wild or on farms or preserves is appended; readers will be eager to see these mighty beasts in the flesh. Index.
