ALL ABOUT WHALES

Not, of course, all about whales, but an introductory survey of the many kinds of whales and their characteristics, by an experienced writer with many fine natural-history books to her credit. The first part of the book is a compilation of the characteristics of the various whales with teeth and the larger baleen whales. More interestingly, later chapters discuss more general traits--growth and habits, senses, communication. The whales' endangered status is touched on briefly. The black-and -white photos on every page are well chosen and reproduced; with a few exceptions, they are taken in natural settings from above-water viewpoints, a fair representation of what people can nor. mally see of whales. To children accustomed to splashy color and underwater photography as seen on TV, they may seem limited and hard to read. Clear and succinct, this should find a useful place in library collections.
