by Dorothy Hoobler & Thomas Hoobler ‧ RELEASE DATE: Nov. 1, 1995
An attractive and extremely useful entry by the Hooblers (The Chinese American Family Album, 1994, etc.) in the American Family Album series, this documentary history covers the mid-17th century to the present. The authors combine short essays with over 130 brief excerpts from letters, diaries, memoirs, and interviews, accompanied by more than 175 black-and-white photographs (most quite small, some blurry with age). Arranged topically (e.g., ``Leaving Home,'' ``New Arrivals,'' ``Pioneers in the West,'' etc.) rather than strictly chronologically, the volume's many voices tell of the persecutions that motivated waves of immigration, the hardships of the journey, and the struggles and successes of life in America. This is for a somewhat younger audience than Milton Meltzer's The Jewish Americans: A History in Their Own Words (1982), with Holocaust testimonies that are not as harrowing as those he cites; Meltzer's provides longer quotations from fewer sources (including about a dozen of those found here) and lacks illustration. (chronology, bibliography, index) (Nonfiction. 9+)

by Victoria Sherrow ‧ RELEASE DATE: March 1, 1994
The life of one of the century's most influential political leaders, from birth and a lackluster academic career in India and England to emergence as a social activist who combated racism in South Africa and, later, India. Gandhi's personal transformation from a painfully shy, hesitant speaker to a charismatic proponent of what he called ``satyagraha,'' or ``truth-force,'' is such a fascinating subject that virtually any recounting of his life makes compelling reading. Directed toward middle school readership, Sherrow's account treads the ground between superficiality and depth. Personal problems such as Gandhi's difficult relationships with his sons and the wife from whom he demanded so much sacrifice and self-denial are mentioned but not dwelt on. The public man receives the weight of attention here; his motivations and methods are well, if briefly, examined, while the impact of his use of civil disobedience and nonviolent protest to effect social change is also discussed in relation to the US civil rights movement. Useful and thought-provoking. B&w photos; source notes; chronology; bibliography; index. (Biography. 11-14)

by Robert Ellwood & Gregory Alles ‧ RELEASE DATE: July 1, 1998
This impressive volume on the world’s religions attempts to be simple, interesting, and “not partial to the point of view of one religious tradition or another.” Beginning with the entry Aaron, the brother of Moses, and ending with Zoroastrianism, a religion begun in Iran by the prophet Zarathustra, this encyclopedia aptly presents religions in two ways: from the “outside” (history, teachings, practices, and organization) and “inside” (the feelings of the believers, the way they look at the world, and “the things that are actually important in their religious lives”). Ellwood and Alles’s thorough approach to their vast subject answers the questions that teenagers have about religion. A helpful topical outline follows; it groups the entries according to main headings: “Buddhism,” “Christianity,” “Confucianism,” “Hinduism,” “Judaism,” etc., making even more accessible this informative and comprehensive reference work. (b&w charts, maps, photographs, index, not seen, bibliography) (Nonfiction. 13- 15)
