A delicate, penetrative piece of work with incident and character interacting to fine drawn narration, this is a first novel for discerning readers. Here is Mrs. Willetts' marriage to Charles, exasperating, older husband who is unable to understand any part of parenthood, and her attempts to break with the routine of respectability he loves, to escape his nagging attempts to maintain his standards, to hold on to love and happiness. Charles had driven her to small slynesses to support the two children, had imported his sister into their household to bring the children up his way, had taunted her into her filing job and had robbed the home of any family feeling. Mrs. Willetts' chance friendship with a woman poet opens her eyes to the way life could be lived and the accident that forces her out of her imprisoning rut brings her Dr. Maclane who, with her children, gives her strength to leave Charles.
