THE UNINVITED

A story of a tragedy of violence in the past -- and of a house which, haunted in legend end in fact, perpetuated the past into the present. Save for a certain obviousness of dialogue (an amateurishness, perhaps), it is a good yarn, and has holding points of romance and provocation. Roderick and his sister Pam find a lovely, old house by the English , which they buy from eighteen-year-old Stella, who is living in the village with her dour, iron-reined grandfather. Strange manifestations occur at night, which urge them on to solve the mystery of the house and of Stella's percentage. Villagers have spun a tale around her artist-wastrel father, her saintly, forgiving mother, and a Spanish girl, Carmel, with whom the father had been involved. But Pam and Roderick prove this to have been false rationalization, and find that Stella was child of Carmel, taken from her by the self-righteous Mary. The haunting spirits are satisfied; Roderick is from to claim Stella. Good enough entertainment; better writing would have made it more significant.
