ENEMY AND BROTHER

An expert evocation of setting is no substitute for suspense. Miss Davis telling the story in the voice of a fortyish, pedantic bachelor is as unbelievable as the plot, which skids around in the politics of Greece. In 1947, Jabez Emory was condemned to death for the murder of a fellow American correspondent, then dramatically, secretly rescued. Twenty years later he returns as Prof. John Eakins, Byron scholar, to find out what had happened and how he was framed. Freighted with philosophical/political exchanges to a contrived ending, the audience (as Byron once said) will be those Davis fans at, ""...the years/Which certain people call a 'certain age'..."" and well over.
