A young woman comes to a midwestern town to do a feature on one of those self-made prominent politicos and on the way becomes sympathetic to the story of a scientist who has spent his life blanketed in anonymity under a greater man, Lowenthal. Once there -- there's the murder of Lowenthal which seems minimal in view of the student activities in this town and gown community and worse, black/white unrest. Miss Davis is telling three different stories, one allusive, two relevant-real. They're all good and she handles them well.
