A DEATH IN THE LIFE

Quite a switch from Miss Davis' apple-checked hometown stories even if she did take on the Mafia in her last book, The Little Brothers. Now she's into ""The Life"" of New York's not too inner city where love or rather sex is for sale. Julie Hays, second wife ""sometimes"" of Jess who's away, bounced by her shrink for her do-nothingness, gets involved with Rita, just sixteen, a prostitute who wants out of The Life except there's her pimp and also Pete, a designer friend of Julie's to whom she was attached before he was murdered. Was he trying to save her or use her? Miss Davis keeps in more than one kind of touch and this is street smart and susceptible.
