A SENSE OF WONDER: Selections from Great Writers of Nature

With an unerring eye for the intriguing, the book's editor (she's also the founder and editor of Junior Natural History) has selected the most interest-whetting pieces of the nature writing greats. Here is Fabre on wasp watching, Seton on tracking and trailing and Beebe on underwater exploration. These selections have not been widely anthologized before. Perhaps the most unusual excerpt included is from the writings of Marco Polo -- with his observations about the nature of Madagascar. The most inspired selections are those from Thoreau and Darwin. These awesome and off-putting reputations are brought into reader perspective with Thoreau on winter animals at Walden and Darwin's remarks on kelp from the engaging journal Voyage of the Beagle. The reader reaction is hopefully likely to be the urge for further reading.
