An Air Force flight surgeon's account of the ""Man High"" balloon operation which, in attempting to study the effects of outer space on future rocketeers, took man higher than he has gone before for prolonged periods. The Colonel's story begins with preparations and testing in New Mexico and Minnesota, continues to early ascents, includes his own ascent which took him above 100,000 feet for twenty four hours. Included is a thrilling story of the following ascent of another balloonist who, because of faulty machinery, was forced to endure a fever of 108 degrees for several hours yet lived to tell about it. Scientific and medical data throughout is made understandable to the layman, but the book is somewhat injured by the rather superficial and slick style which is obviously that of the collaborator.
