CHITA

Commentary on the gradual disappearance of our western lions. The life story of Chita, a female cougar, helps to illustrate the author's point. Twice captured by the McCarthey's, ranch owners in the Tahosa Valley of Colorado, she finally escapes to the hills. She is wary of man, having seen her mother and first mate shot down, so she is better able to avoid him than the rest of her kind. After six years of wild life, Chita is killed trying to rescue one of her cubs from a forest fire. There is more fact than fiction in this book. Of interest to animal lovers of any age, it gives a concise and vivid picture of the life habits of a mountain lion.
