DEMI, THE BABY SITTER

In the beginning, the dog Demi didn't like a lot of things; the cat next door for instance or the mailman he couldn't scare, but his pet peeve was the blame he silently assumed for baby's misdeeds. Yet by chance, Demi achieves a permanent place in the good graces of mother through some accidental heroism, and shares a sweet secret with baby (chocolate ice cream) through some deliberate protection. A first rate baby sitter is he, though the resolution here falls short of the clever buildup. Meg Wohlberg's winsome illustrations give us a most decorative poodle and a most delectable baby. For the youngest of this category.
