PREMEDICATED MURDER

Who would know that castor oil, or rather ricin--a derivative thereof--can be the ultimate eliminator? Quiet Det. Supt. Masters of the Yard does of course and this is another admirably compact if somewhat short story pursuing the death via ricin of Harte, a war-maimed cripple almost too well liked by this small British community. Which also finds his neighbor Rencory ""detestable"" even if Harte and his wife had befriended him for reasons unknown to everyone and unsuspected by each other. The Anglicisms require attention--""gizzing at bits of capurtle""--but not enough to deter your interest in the fine deductive workmanship, both specific and inferential.
