R. E. Lee -- Vols. 3 & 4

The eagerly awaited two final volumes of the definitive life of Lee, introduced to the public on October 5th, sustain the high mark set by the first volumes. An essential purchase for all who bought the other volumes, and a chance for putting new pressure on the sale of the four as a unit ($15.00). A fine press and word of mouth endorsement kept volumes one and two on the best seller lists right up to and through the holiday season....Volume three takes up the thread immediately following the death of ""Stonewall"" Jackson, and carries through the tragic winter of 1865. Volume four ends with the death of Lee, and includes a comprehensive bibliography and the index for these two volumes. Each volume carries its own appendix, and -- as with the earlier volumes -- both are carefully documented throughout. A scholarly work, profoundly moving, and at the same time essentially human. Lee emerges, not as a paragon, though it is in no sense a ""debunking"" biography, but a flesh and blood man, with certain weaknesses, not so much of character as of judgment. Fully illustrated, with contemporary photographs and numerous maps and charts.
