In a Prayer For Tomorrow Downing told the story of the rise and fall of a mushroom town: in Hope Of Living he wrote an excellent Dakota prairie story; now in Sioux City he divides the interest between the growth of a town into a city and the development of an ambitious youth into a successful promoter. The town is symbolic of America, and the story of its emergence into a boom city, with all its symptoms of gangling youth, its nearness to the farm lands on which it feeds, and its eagerness to ignore them, is extremely well done. The love story is less successful; both the girl and the boy are patterned. Though not an important novelist, Downing is doing good American regional fiction.
