An urbane consideration of the ambivalent nature of man as it affects himself and the group is personalized with numerous examples of particular patterns and generalized by the overall conception of the book. Dr. Hutschnecker gives most space to the explanation of individual behavior -- of the growth of the individual, the course of adolescence, the reasons why men fight, the rivalry of the sexes, social misfits, etc... He considers the relations in the family circle, the concept of the herd instinct in man, intertribal tensions, the tendency to peace or war. Here is the book's essential contribution -- the placing of psychology's discoveries at the feet of nations to understand world attitudes by them if possible and achieve peace through a positive Weltanschauung on the individual level.
