Dr. Cain has been studying and practicing in the field of alcoholism since 1947. He is the author of Young People and Drinking (p. 979, 1963) and of an article which appeared in Harper's in February, 1963 titled ""Alcoholics Anonymous; Cult or cure"" It is this article which takes up the burden of the book here, as it is repeated in full and the responses, pro and con, in letters, are printed following it. Dr. Cain is concerned with the prevailing attitude toward alcoholism and toward the alcoholic, whom he would define as a person whose consumption of beverage alcohol is causing a continuing problem in that person's life. He feels that A.A. has become formalized, has not been the answer for every alcoholic, has dealt essentially with what he terms the arrested alcoholic who still longs to become intoxicated, rather than the recovered alcoholic, who is in control of his total behavior so that alcohol is no longer a problem, or--the final step--the cured alcoholic, who can drink normally. This step has been achieved through the author with seven individuals who participated in an encompassing therapeutic program with the intellectual element included. This is a cause book: the author's excitement tends to assertion rather than proof, but it is a breakthrough thesis he is presenting. Likely to raise some hackles but not cause too big a stir.
